The Hidden Cost of the Highlight Reel

It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

Soft. Peaceful. Put together.

There’s something about an image like this that draws you in. It feels calm. Almost effortless. Like everything is in place.

And if we’re not careful, we can start to believe that what we’re seeing is real life.

And this one?

This is real life.

No soft glow.

No perfect lighting.

No carefully created background.

Just me.

Social media has changed what we think is normal

Every day, we scroll past images that are filtered, edited, carefully chosen, and sometimes even enhanced beyond reality.

We see:

The best moments

The best angles

The finished version of someone’s story

But we don’t see:

The hard conversations

The quiet struggles

The moments of doubt

The process it took to get there

And over time, something subtle begins to happen.

We start comparing our real, everyday lives… to someone else’s highlight reel.

“Why do I feel this way when everyone else seems okay?”

This is something I hear often.

Women quietly asking themselves:

Am I overreacting?

Why can’t I just move on?

What’s wrong with me?

But what if the problem isn’t you?

What if you’ve simply been measuring your life against something that was never meant to be a full picture?

Real healing doesn’t look polished

Healing is not a perfectly filtered image.

It’s:

Messy at times

Slow in ways we don’t expect

Honest and sometimes uncomfortable

Full of small steps that no one else sees

It doesn’t always “look good” from the outside.

But that doesn’t mean it isn’t real.

And it definitely doesn’t mean you’re doing it wrong.

You are not behind

If you feel like everyone else has it together…

If you feel like you should be further along by now…

If you wonder why it still affects you…

Please hear this:

You are not behind.

You are walking through something real.

And real things take real time.

A gentle reminder

God never asked you to present a polished version of yourself.

He doesn’t meet you in the filtered, perfected version of your life.

He meets you:

In the questions

In the healing process

In the moments no one else sees

Right there, in what is real.

You’re not seeing the full picture

So the next time you find yourself comparing…

Pause.

Remind yourself:

This might be beautiful…

but it’s not the whole story.

And neither is yours.

If this resonates with you, please know you are not alone.

So many women are quietly carrying these same questions and feelings while trying to make sense of their story and their healing.

This is exactly why I created The Becoming Collective for Women, a 9 week faith based guided healing experience.

It is a safe space to slow down, learn, grow, and walk through healing in a way that is honest, supportive, and grounded in truth.

If you would like to learn more or see when the next group begins, you can visit my Events page

You don’t have to walk this journey alone.
